Free Acoustic Modes Calculator

For all those who write and mix their own music or have an expensive hi-fi or TV, ModeCalc is a free windows or Boot Camp app to help with setting up your room acoustics. You enter your studio dimensions and it tells you at which frequencies you may have problems. It also tells you your room ratio and lists several ideals. It doesn’t need to be installed, just run from any folder.

ModeCalc calculates and displays the first 16 axial modes, up to 500 Hz, for any rectangular room using dimensions you enter as either feet and inches or meters. It can help you design a new room that sounds as good as possible, or predict the low frequency behavior of an existing room.

As you can see from this screenshot, an almost square/ cube room, which a lot of rooms are, is a bad room for a studio. All the modes (standing waves) coincide at the same frequencies giving big spikes and uneven dips (frequency calcellation) inbetween. It also lists ideal ratios and a suggested minimum room size of 70 cubic meters, which is around a 6m x 5m room.
